The E655 series, branded Nagomi, is a purpose-built Japanese dual-voltage electric multiple unit operated by the East Japan Railway Company since November 2007 on charter services, as well as serving as the Japanese imperial train.
History[]
Branded the Nagomi, the E655 series was designed in 2007 to replace the aging steam locomotive-hauled imperial train. Five cars were initially produced, with the sixth car, the imperial car, added later. The lone set is only used on chartered services or on imperial train workings. The set is based at Oku Depot and does not have a fleet number, although sites documenting fleet numbers give it a fleet designator of "Nagomi".
In order to be privy to rides on the E655 series set, one has to be a member of JR East's "Otona no Kyujitsu Club" or "Zipangu Club" (which offers various trips for active seniors) for Japan residents or to book a flight ticket to Japan from a travel agency that offers this sort of itinerary.
The most recent occasion when the set was used as an imperial train was in September 2019.
Design[]
The E655 series uses a somewhat streamlined design with a purple body and golden accents.
Specifications[]
Construction is of an aluminum alloy. End cars are 21.115 meters long while intermediate cars are 20 meters long. Traction motors are powered by two-level insulated gate bipolar transistors manufactured by Hitachi which produce a hissing noise as the train accelerates from idle.
The train has a mounting socket on its nose which is used to mount the Imperial Chrysanthemum Seal-shaped ornament; this ornament is only used when the E655 series set is on an imperial train working.
The E655 series set is equipped with a later version of a musical horn that is standard on most of JR East's Limited Express fleet. The musical horn is usually blasted when the set is about to depart.
