The E127 series is a Japanese suburban electric multiple unit operated by the East Japan Railway Company since May 1995.
History[]
The E127 series was constructed to replace aging 165 and 169 series cars due to aging and various other issues.
Twenty-five two-car sets were produced, with the first entering service on 8 May 1995. Ten of the original thirteen E127-0 series sets were sold to Echigo Tokimeki Railway in 2015 to become ET127 series sets. One set, V3, was sidelined in 2008 due damage from a level crossing crash and car KuMoHa E127-3 subsequently burning up in September 2008; the set was scrapped in October 2014.
Design[]
The E127 series is heavily based on the 209 series, so some design language such as the overall body shape carries over. Both variants of the E127 series have a top-mounted dual beam headlight; the E127-0 series's headlights are enclosed while the E127-100 series's headlights are exposed, à la 701 series cars.
Specifications[]
Construction is of stainless steel. Each car is 20 meters long. Traction motors are later-specification gate-turn off thyristor variable frequency drives manufactured by Tōyō Denki Seizō which produce a very distinctive raspy roar when accelerating from idle; later sets were refurbished to use two-level insulated gate bipolar transistor variable frequency drives also manufactured by Tōyō Denki Seizō which have a rather melodic cadence.
The E127 series is one of only two train types in the whole of JR's fleet that use Tōyō Denki Seizō gate turn-off thyristor inverters; the other train type is JR Shikoku's pre-production 8000 series set S1 (production 8000 series sets use two-level gate turn-off thyristor variable frequency drives manufactured by Toshiba).
V10 was fitted with high-intensity discharged headlights and a different front pilot for about a year.
Trivia[]
- The E127 series' fleet numbers (V1, V2 etc.) are stickers. With V3's scrapping, the fleet numbers of sets V4 to V13 were changed, with V4 becoming V3, V5 becoming V4, and so on, taking advantage of the stickers.
