Locomotive Wiki

The Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Class E-1 was a class of ten 2-10-2 "Santa Fe" type steam locomotives that were built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) for the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway (DM&IR) in 1919 as part of the USRA Light Santa Fe.

History[]

Construction and Delivery[]

A total of ten locomotives of this class were constructed by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) Brook Works in 1919 as part of the USRA Light Santa Fe design. All ten examples were reclassified as the E-1 and were delivered to the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway (DM&IR) that same year.

They were the epitome of the slow drag engine, not really capable of going fast speeds but strong enough to pull slow freight and coal trains with ease.

Retirement[]

Nine members of the class were retired between 1952-1954. They were all scrapped while the sole remaining locomotive of the class continued to work on until 1962.

Sole Survivor[]

No. 506 was constructed in 1919 by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) and was delivered to the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway (DM&IR) the same year it was built. It was retired in 1962 and was donated to the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, Wisconsin, where it was placed on static display at the museum.

As of today, No. 506 is still on display at the National Railroad Museum and has remained there ever since. It is not only the sole surviving member of the Class E-1, but is also the sole surviving USRA Light Santa Fe type steam locomotive, and still holds that title to this day.
