The locomotive known as "Cairns" is a 0-6-0 steam locomotive that was built in 1939 by the Hudswell, Clarke & Co. Ltd of Leeds, England.

"Cairns" worked at the CSR (Colonial Sugar Refinery) Hambledon Mill in North Queensland for a time. It was then transferred to CSRs' Victoria Mill at Ingham, North Queensland. While there it earned it's nickname since the Victoria Mill locomotives were mostly named after Australian Eastern cities.

The locomotive was donated to the Illawarra Light Railway in 1978 becoming the No. 1 of their fleet. After receiving an overhaul "Cairns" began running active duties at Albion Park in 1979. Since its arrival at the park, "Cairns" has generally been in regular service hauling passenger trains on running days.

"Cairns" is currently out of service and is on display as a future restoration project.
