Class 962 Shinkansen was the designation given to an experimental high-speed electric multiple unit operated by the Japanese National Railways from February 1979 to January 1983. The set was used as the prototype for the 200 Series Shinkansen trains to be introduced on the line.
History[]
The lone Class 962 set was constructed in 1979 and was tested on the "Oyama Test Track" from 22 February 1979; its role as a test train ended in June 1980 on said track. After testing ended at the "Oyama Test Track", the set was then tested on the Jōetsu Shinkansen prior to its opening.
The set was converted to Class 925 "Doctor Yellow" track inspection set S2 starting from January 1983.

The Class 962 looked very similar to the Class 961 Shinkansen, but with extra snow proofing measures; all six cars featured motors.
All cars except car 962-5 and 962-6 had actual interior configurations based on 0 Series or 200 Series Shinkansen seating. Cars 962-5 and 962-6 were used exclusively for equipment. Bogie and diaphragm shrouds were added to mitigate noise pollution issues, as with the Class 961 sets.
