The Class 925 Shinkansen was a Japanese non-revenue earning high-speed electric multiple unit operated by the Japanese National Railways and its successor the East Japan Railway Company from November 1979 to September 2002. These were the first and only generation of Doctor Yellow trains operated by JR East.

History

The first Class 925 set, set S1 (designated the 925-0), was delivered in 1979; it was not based on any existing technology and was a completely new build. The set was retired in 2001 and scrapped with the introduction of the E926 Series Shinkansen.

A second Class 925 set, set S2 (designated the925-10), was converted from the former Class 962 Shinkansen set. The set was retired from service on 25 September 2002, but was only officially retired on 25 January 2003 and scrapped.

No Class 925 cars have been preserved.

Design

The Class 925 looked rather similar to the 0 Series Shinkansen and the soon-to-be-produced 200 Series Shinkansen; in fact, set S2 was the prototype of the 200 Series cars before it was converted into a dedicated test train.

S1 was initially painted in ivory with green stripes, the same color as the 200 Series Shinkansen sets, before it received its yellow paint scheme in February 1983.

Specifications

Very little information is available on the Class 925 Shinkansen, so it can be assumed it used very similar equipment to that of the similar Class 922 Shinkansen that operated on JR West lines.
