Chicago and North Western No. 274 is a historic 4-4-0 "American" type steam locomotive built in 1873. The locomotive is a significant artifact of early American railroad history and is on display at the National Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, Missouri.

History[]

Chicago and North Western locomotive No. 274 was a 4-4-0 type steam locomotive built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1873. It is now a preserved piece of railroad history, on display at the National Museum of Transportation in Kirkwood, Missouri.

Chicago and North Western No. 274 was saved from being scrapped by Purdue University, which used it for its railroad laboratory. In 1951, the university donated the locomotive to the National Museum of Transportation.
