The Chicago and North Western Class R-1 were a series of 4-6-0 type steam locomotives that operates on the Chicago and North Western Transportation Company.
History[]
240 of these locomotives were built between 1901 and 1908 by the Alco-Schenectady and 85 were built by Baldwin. They were order to increase the power of ten-wheelers for freight use, the R-1 was designed on the basis of the class R. As more powerful locomotives became available, the R-1 was progressively pushed out of main line freight service on branch lines.
The first larger numbers were retired from 1939 and by 1957 the last one disappeared. Today only three survived into preservation No. 175, No. 1385, and No. 444.
