Chicago & Illinois Midland No. 551 is one of three USRA design Mikado type (2-8-2) locomotives built for the Chicago & Illinois Midland Railroad that sits on display at the Museum of Transportation.
History[]
Built by Lima in 1928 it spent most of it's life hauling coal trains from Illinois Midland Coal Mines to Commonwealth Edison Electric Generating Plants.
The Chicago & Illinois Midland railroad donated it to the museum in 1955.
Trivia[]
- Lima built one more F-4 for the C&IM in 1938, and the railroad also rostered two second hand Lima Milkados.
- No. 551 is the only surviving C&IM steam locomotive in preservation.
