No. 111 was a 4-8-0 "Mastodon" type steam locomotive that was built by the American Locomotive Company's (ALCO) Richmond Plant in November 1911. It was originally purchased by the Norfolk and Western Railway (N&W) as part of an order of fifty Class M-1 locomotives.
Originally it served as No. 1077 while working on the N&W and was assigned mainline freight duty until the late 1930's when more powerful articulated locomotives were placed in service to command massive coal drags from West Virginia to Lambert's Point on the East Coast.
Trying to shed some extra motive power, N&W agreed to sell six of their 4-8-0 locomotives to the Chesapeake Western Railway (CW) in 1943 and No. 1077 was one of the chosen six. It was renumbered to No. 111 and was used to handle larger freight trains on the CW. The locomotive was used until it was replaced by new Baldwin DS44-660 diesel switchers in 1946. No. 111, along with it's five siblings, were all retired and scrapped in 1947 at the Elkton shops in Virginia.
