Locomotive Wiki

Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad 1601 is a 2-6-6-6 Allegheny steam locomotive built in December 1941 by the Lima Locomotive Works.

These beasts of a locomotive could go up to 45 miles an hour hauling 11,500 ton coal trains over the Allegheny Mountains.

Two of this type survive today, the 1601 being one of them. It was retired in 1956 and sent to The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan, where it resides today on static display. Initially displayed outdoors, when the time came to place #1601 in the Museum, the doors and doorframe had to be removed to allow the Allegheny to fit inside.

Today, #1601 is one of The Henry Ford's most popular attractions.
