Canadian Pacific No. 694 was a class "D-10b" 4-6-0 "Ten-Wheeler" Steam Locomotive that was built in 1906 for the Canadian Pacific Railway (or CP Rail), it was constructed by the Montreal Locomotive Works, but it was in-fact one of the 502 examples of the D-10s that were constructed.

Accident[]

In the early morning hours in 1910, Canadian Pacific No. 694 was hauling a train over the Aguasabon River and began to approach mink harbour in the Lake Superior, they had the cliffs to their left and the lake to the right, however as they rounded a corner, they were bearing towards a rockslide that was blocking the rails. The train slammed into the rocks sending the engine and two of the boxcars that Canadian Pacific No. 694 was pulling into the lake, it had fell 65 feet (19.9 meters) down the cliff before it hit the water and sank.

Aftermath[]

This accident became a legend among the locals and certain elements regarding it would remain a mystery until quite recently where the train was, where it disappeared to and whether or not it was intact. It was left in the Lake Superior until it was discovered in 2016 by a man named "Tom Crossman".

As of today, Canadian Pacific No. 694 is still lying on the bottom of Lake Superior and is still in good shape.

Trivia[]

  • There was an attempt to raise the Canadian Pacific No. 694 out of the Lake Superior, but that idea was eventually cancelled due to the locomotive would likely deteriorate and that it was mostly in pieces
