It was in use in fast passenger service on the Canadian Pacific Railway until it being retired in 1959 after having its duties taken over by diesel locomotives, and it was placed in storage until 1965 when it was purchased for display in the Steamtown, U.S.A. collection in Bellows Falls, VT.

Restoration work of 2317 began in March 1976. The rebuilding process on the locomotive resumed in June 1978, with the hopes of bringing it back by the Annual Railfan's Weekend in October of that year. On October 1, 1978, the locomotive was fired up for the first time in nineteen years, and it joined Canadian Pacific No. 1293 and Canadian Pacific No. 1246 in Steamtown's operating fleet, painted in the Canadian Pacific gray-blue and Tuscan red livery, a livery it never wore in revenue service.

In 1986, 2317 was painted in the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad's "Pocono Mountain Route" livery. It remained as the "Pocono Mountain Route" until after the National Park Service took over Steamtown in 1987 when it was repainted into the livery it wore in active service with Canadian Pacific.

2317 operated several excursions at Steamtown alongside Canadian National No. 3254 until being taken out of service in late 2010 for its mandated 15-year boiler inspection and overhaul. As of today, 2317 is stored indefinitely inside Steamtown's roundhouse alongside 3254, which was later retired from excursion service in December 2012. According to Steamtown, they originally planned to return 2317 back to operation again after they complete the restoration of Boston & Maine No. 3713. However, as of 2022, 2317 still remains on static display, as Steamtown themselves have stated they have no plans on returning it to steam anytime soon due to its poor mechanical condition.
