Canadian National No. 2415 was a GE C40-8M built by General Electric for Canadian National Railway in March 1990[1] as one of 55 GE C40-8M diesel locomotives ordered by the railway. When it arrived on Canadian National, it was classified as an EF-640b by CN themselves. Canadian National's order of 55 GE C40-8M diesel locomotives were split into two batches with 2415 being part of the first batch as evident by the Canadian National Railway's "zebra" paint scheme which consisted of two marker lights, the striped plow and the classical mounted bell on the top which was an icon for any Canadian diesel locomotives of any type.
Canadian National No. 2415 had served well on lines operated by the Canadian National Railway for many years, handling freight trains nationwide across the CN's network.
No. 2415 would continue to serve on Canadian National until being retired around 2021 and was sold to Larry's Truck and Electric (LTEX) in McDonald, Ohio on November 6, 2022. but was later scrapped.[1]
Accidents and incidents[]
Canadian National No. 2415 was involved in three accidents throughout its career on the Canadian National Railway.
- In November 1996, No. 2415 was involved in a wreck that had caused it to get a questionable amount of damage, but was repaired and returned to service in 1998.
- On December 23, 2002, No. 2415 was trailing on an intermodal train near Langley in British Columbia when a dump truck turned onto a crossing and the intermodal train that #2415 was running on had collided with the dump truck and derailed. No. 2415 had suffered severe cab damage when some of the intermodal cars came and crushed its cab, ripping it open. Despite the damage, it was repaired and returned to service.
- On January 31, 2015, No. 2415 was hauling a Southbound manifest down Canadian National's Bala Subdivision, when two of the freight cars derailed right behind its train, and surprisingly, #2415 suffered no damage as a result of the accident and no spills nor injuries were reported as the crew managed to come out fine, but resulted in road traffic at a nearby crossing being rerouted. The exact cause of the derailment isn't known.
