CSX Transportation No. 8392 is an SD40-2 type diesel locomotive built by Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) in 1971, originally for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway (C&O) as their No. 7533. In 1986, the Chessie System, Inc. and the Seaboard System Railroad merged into CSX Transportation, at which point, it was renumbered to CSX 8392. It was eventually retired from service and sold to National Railway Equipment (NREX) in Mount Vernon, IL.
History[]
On May 15, 2001, CSX No. 8888 was pulling a train of 47 cars, which included some loaded tanker cars filled with hazardous chemicals, out of Stanley Yard in Walbridge Yard in Stanley, OH and ran uncontrollably for just under two hours at up to 51 miles per hour (82 km/h).
It was finally halted by the crew of No. 8392, who at the time, were also hauling a freight train. No. 8392 was uncoupled from the freight train it was pulling and took chase. It eventually caught up with the runaway train and the crew of No. 8392 coupled their locomotive onto the rear car and slowed the train by applying the dynamic brakes.
After the runaway incident, which would later became known as the "Crazy Eights" incident, No. 8392 returned to service hauling freight for CSX until being retired and eventually sold to National Railway Equipment (NREX) in Mount Vernon, IL.
