The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Classes O-1 and O-1a is a class of 2-8-2 "Mikado" type steam locomotives that were built in two series of the class, such as the "O-1" and "O-1a".
History[]
During the days of steam, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad needed a new class of steam locomotive that could haul freight trains at fast speeds, in response to this, the Baldwin Locomotive Works, who was insisting on designing a locomotive class for the CB&Q had went back to the drawing board to refine the design. Enter the CB&Q Classes O-1 and O-1a, they were built to haul freight trains at a maximum speed of 65 mph (105 km/h) and that they had two types of series within the class, such as the "O-1" and "O-1a". A total of 60 of these locomotives were built and were numbered 4940-4999. They were the last order for 2-8-2s made by the CB&Q.
Preservation[]
As of today, four examples are still in preservation, those four being Nos. 4960 (Now operated by the Grand Canyon Railroad as Grand Canyon No. 4960), 4963, 4978, and 4994. The latter three are currently on static display and are unlikely to ever run again.
