A Builder's Plate is a part of a Steam locomotive that is usually placed on the side of the smokebox or the cab and sometimes on the frames of an engine. It is used to signify which company had built the particular locomotive that it was attached to, what year it was built, where it was built, and for what the serial number/works number of the locomotive is. Some models of diesel locomotives also carry these. On some diesels their plates are called "Builder sticker".
