The British Rail Class 252 was a class of High Speed Trainset that is allocated to the prototype High Speed Train (HST) unit, numbered 252001.

History[]

Only one trainset was ever constructed in 1972, the prototype High Speed Train (HST) units were considered to be formed of two locomotives at either end of a rake of carriages. As a result, the power cars were designated Class 41 and numbered as #41001 and #41002, while the carriages were given numbers in the new Mark 3 carriage number series.

Each car has spanned 56 feet 4 in (17.17 meters) long, the trainset weighted 68.5 metric tonnes (67.4 long tons; 75.5 short tons) and had a maximum speed of 143.2 mph (230.5 km/h).

The trainset remained in service for ten years until it was withdrawn from active service around 1982 and one power car, No. 41001 has survived into preservation.
