Hilda is a 0-4-0ST saddle tank steam locomotive which worked at a Plaster Works in Newark in Nottinghamshire, and is currently stored at Bere Ferrers Station, as part of the Tamar Belle Heritage Centre in Devon, England.

History[]

Hilda was built by Peckett and Sons of Bristol in 1938 as builder's number 1963 to Peckett's M5 class design for the Cafferata and Company Limited, who used Hilda at their Newark Plaster Works.[1][2] Cafferata became part of British Gypsum (the domestic subsidiary of BPB plc). British Gypsum withdrew Hilda in 1971 from Beacon Hill Plaster Works, and it was acquired that December by Ray Bailey and David Kemp.[2] In July, 1973 Hilda moved to the Main Line Steam Trust at Loughborough,[1] remaining stored until July, 1996 when it moved to Bere Ferrers Station[2] under the Tamar Belle Heritage Group, being sourced by Chris Grove and Bill Bailey.[3] While stored at Bere Ferrers Station it has been slowly under restoration, with the boiler being removed for repair, a new firebox fabricated, and a building chimney fitted as the funnel, all by early 2009.[1] Hilda remains stored at Bere Ferrers, though is publicly visible, and is dressed to look like Percy from Thomas & Friends.[4]
