The Bessemer and Lake Erie H1 was a class of 47 2-10-4 "Texas" type locomotives built between 1929 and 1944.

In 1929, the B&LE needed a new locomotive to pull the heavier trains, so they bought a 2-10-4 from Baldwin for test runs and was numbered 601, along with being given the classification of H1a. These giant "Texas" type engines were copies of the Burlington Route's M4 "Colorados".

B&LE 643 is the only B&LE 2-10-4 that was saved from scrap, and after years of neglect while facing an uncertain future, it was bought by the Age of Steam Roundhouse in Sugarcreek, Ohio, where it is planned (and it is to be hoped) to be put on display.
