The Baldwin Class 12-28 ¼ E was a series of 2-8-2 "Mikado" type steam locomotive built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for some American Railroads.

History[]

The class was designed in the 1910s with one example East Broad Top #12 "Millie" being that said example but in the 1930s an updated version was drawn up. This version had 44' inch driving wheels, 17 in x 22 in (431.8 mm x 558.8 mm) cylinders, a boiler pressure of 205 psi (1413.4 kPa), a tractive effort of 25,179 lbf (112 kN), and weighed in at 72 tons without tender (115.25 tons with tender). Their tenders could hold up to 8 tons of coal and 4,000 gallons of water.

The White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad Company acquired four locomotives based on this design and reclassified them as the Class 70.

Accidents and Incidents[]

  • White Pass & Yukon Route No. 72 was involved in a roundhouse fire that had destroyed the locomotive in 1969 and its boiler was scrapped in 1974.
  • EBT No. 12 "Millie" on her maiden voyage, derailed her lead truck on some ice buildup inside Sidling Hill Tunnel and derailed completely when the truck got caught on a switch.
  • White Pass & Yukon Route No. 70 was was involved in 4 major accidents during the course of her career, which occurred in 1940, an unspecified year in the late 1940's, 1951, and 1955 respectively. The first and last 2 wrecks caused her to turn over on her side.
