History[]

Construction and Delivery[]

The Baldwin Class 10-26-D were constructed by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and they were all delivered to their respective railroads all across the United States of America after their construction date.

Design[]

These locomotives had 55.50 inch diameter driving wheels, a boiler pressure of 135 psi (0.90 MPa), 19 inch x 24 inch cylinders, and a tractive effort of 17,913 lbf (79.68 kN). Each locomotive weighed in at 43.2 tons (81.55 tons with tender).

Their tenders could hold up to 8 tons of wood and 4,000 gallons of water.

The St. Louis–San Francisco Railway ordered 10 of these locomotives from January 1879 to May 1880, the Western and Atlantic Railroad was also interested in the product and bought one and named it "The Acworth" in 1881.

Preservation[]

As of today, none of the 19th Century 10-26-D locomotives have been preserved , but five examples of 20th Century attempt for this class of locomotive is still left in preservation. These five survivors are Puget Sound & Baker River railway No. 2, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina No. 12 which is operational at the Tweetsie Railroad, and Southern Pacific Narrow Gauge No. 8, No. 9, and No. 18, which is currently operational at the Carson & Colorado Railway.
