The 2-4-0 Bagnall locomotives were a series of 2-4-0T narrow-gauge steam locomotives that were constructed by W. G. Bagnall & Co. for narrow gauge railways. It's worth noting that the name "2-4-0 Bagnall" is purely conjectural, as W. G. Bagnall never referred to these locomotives as "2-4-0 Bagnalls".

History[]

The first 2-4-0 Bagnall locomotives were built in the 1880s, with the last 2-4-0 being produced in the 1930s. Many of these narrow-gauge steam locomotives were delivered to various narrow-gauge railways across the world, most notably in India and the United Kingdom.

The locomotives were withdrawn from active service on their respective railways across the globe, and being mostly scrapped in the United Kingdom with only two examples surviving in the UK today. These two well-known examples are Sea Lion and Polar Bear, both on the Groudle Glen Railway, on the Isle of Man, where they worked their entire lives before preservation.

The oldest example of a Bagnall 2-4-0 is preserved in Brazil, exactly where it worked isn't clear however it was numbered 38 and built in 1889, being delivered to Brazil in December of that year. Two more examples are preserved in India, and one more is preserved in Bangladesh.
