An Autorack (also known as an auto carrier or a car transporter) is a specialised piece of rollingstock used to transport automobiles and light commercial vehicles. Car carriers are used to transport vehicles between factories and distribution centers, and can also be used on passenger trains, to transport passengers cars.
Double deck car carrier
Capacity of a car carrier can vary, although double deck car carriers are very ubiquitous throughout the world since the loading gauge in most cases can accomodate them, however in North America and many parts of Australia, the loading gauge is big enough for double stack containers, which allows for triple deck car carriers to be used, significantly increasing productivity and reducing shipping costs.
In some parts of the world, vehicles can be transported in specialised containers, which in several cases are larger and taller than ISO standard containers.
