Clifton-Copperhead Baby-gauge "Number 8" locomotive-1897-3

The Arizona Copper No. 8, or more affectionately named, "Copperhead" Steam Locomotive, was built by the H. K. Porter Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1897 for the Arizona Copper Company of Morenci.

The locomotive once pulled ore trains from the Metcalf mines until it was retired in 1922 when the Coronado Railroad ceased operations.

In 1937 Tommy Sidebotham, a Clifton resident and former train engineer, purchased and cosmetically restored the locomotive. During the restoration it was discovered that No. 8 was missing a few parts. In order to complete the project, various parts from other locomotives such as what was left of the former Arizona Copper No. 9, were cobbled together. Even though some of the parts like the siderods didn't quite fit so well or match the original design, it didn't matter. The locomotive still looked good as new.

Today the old snake is currently enjoying retirement as a static display piece next to the old Clifton Cliff Jail, AZ.
