Locomotive Wiki

The Arizona Copper No. 2, was built by the H. K. Porter Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1882 for the Arizona Copper Company of Morenci. The locomotive received the name "Grant," after someone who had contributed in some way or another toward the Coronado/Morenci.

The Arizona Copper Company purchased five of these locomotives between 1882 and 1886 to haul ore trains from the Metcalf mines on the Coronado railroad.

Locomotive No. 2 ran on 20" tracks. This is 16" less than narrow gauge, and 36 1/2" less than standard gauge tracks. The small locomotive measures only 17 feet long, by 5 feet 5 inches wide and weighs just 11 tons.

The locomotive was retired in 1922 when the Coronado Railroad ceased operations. In 1923 the locomotive along with two other engines (Arizona Copper No. 7 and No. 5), were left abandoned on top of a steep 1,200 foot Coronado mountain incline.

Locomotive No. 2 was recovered in 1990 by Phelps Dodge Morenci, Inc. from the top of the incline at Morenci Mine and donated it to the Arizona Department of Mines and Mineral Resources. Restoration funding was provided by the Arizona Heritage Fund and Phelps Dodge Morenci, Inc.
