The EMD AEM-7's Prototype (Amtrak No. 900) was an AEM-7 type electric locomotive built in collaboration by Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) and ASEA in November 1979 for the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, also known as Amtrak.
It is known to be the prototype of the AEM-7 locomotive that was built. It was used in high-speed passenger service on the electrified Northeast Corridor between Washington DC and Boston, MA until it was destroyed in the Chase, MD Train Collision on January 4, 1987, alongside sister AEM-7 type locomotive No. 903, when both AEM-7s slammed head-on into three Conrail GE B36-7s Nos. 5044, 5052 and 5045 in Chase, MD.
It was so badly damaged in the wreck that it was deemed "damaged beyond repair" and it was scrapped alongside No. 903, thus rendering the AEM-7's Prototype extinct.
