Amtrak No. 406 is an F40PHR type diesel locomotive built by Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) in July 1988 for the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, also known as Amtrak. It was used in regular passenger service for Amtrak until being officially retired in 2001 when the F40PH locomotives slowly began to be replaced in favor of both the GE P32-8BWH and the GE Genesis series in 1991 and 1993 respectively.
It was placed in storage until eventually becoming one of 22 Amtrak F40PH locomotives selected to be converted into non-powered control units (NPCU). As of today, it is still in service with Amtrak as an NPCU. It is also the only F40PH NPCU to be equipped with a head-end power (HEP) system for auxiliary electrical power and heating for the passenger cars, and as a result of this, it is mostly used with Amtrak's exhibit train. As of 2024, it has since been renumbered to 90406 to avoid duplication with the upcoming ALC-42 Charger locomotives, but it continues to wear its Phase III paint scheme.
