Amtrak No. 300 is an ALC-42 (Charger) type diesel locomotive built by Siemens Mobility in April 2021 for the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, also known as Amtrak. The Siemens Charger locomotives were initially purchased by Amtrak in order to replace their older GE Genesis series and EMD F59PHI type locomotives. The ALC-42 Charger locomotives are meant to replace Amtrak's older P40DC and P42DC Genesis locomotives on long-distance passenger services, including the Southwest Chief, the Coast Starlight, the Empire Builder, and the California Zephyr.
It was placed into service with Amtrak in February 2022 where it operated for Amtrak's long-distance passenger services until it was badly wrecked in Moorpark, California on June 28, 2023 when it struck a water truck at a railroad crossing. Due to the severity of the damage it sustained from the impact, it was later reported to be deemed damaged beyond repair. It is currently placed in storage alongside sister ALC-42 type locomotive No. 612, which was also deemed damaged and burned beyond repair after striking a car at a railroad crossing in Mobile, Alabama on April 26, 2023 due to the driver of the car going around the closed crossing gates, but both locomotives will eventually be towed off for scrap.
