The Avelia Liberty.
The Avelia Liberty is a high-speed passenger train built by French manufacturer Alstom. It is related to the TGV and New Pendolino family of high-speed trains, but adapted for the North American railroad standards, including U.S. Federal Railroad Administration crashworthiness standards. Amtrak has ordered 28 trainsets for use on its flagship Acela Express service along the Northeast Corridor between Boston and Washington, D.C. via New York City and Philadelphia. Amtrak claims the trainsets will "allow for increased service including half-hourly Acela Express service between Washington D.C. and New York City during peak hours and hourly service between New York City and Boston." As of March 2020, one of the trainsets was undergoing testing at the Department of Transportation's High Speed Ground Test Center (Transportation Technology Center, Inc.) and construction of the other trainsets was ongoing. The First Avelia Liberty Set was created and started test runs. The train appears to also have a European train horn, instead of the usual Nathan K5LA.
Originally, service was expected to start in 2021, with all trainsets in service by 2022, but the train's debut in service was delayed by multiple issues. The debut in service date was originally delayed to 2022, but was later delayed again to 2023, which was then later delayed once again to 2024. Eventually, the train would finally debut in service on August 28, 2025, with all trainsets slated to be in service by 2026 or 2027 at the very latest. After that happens, all of the first-generation Acela Express trainsets will be officially retired from service after over 30 years.
