The ABB ALP-44 was an electric locomotive which was built by Asea Brown Boveri (ABB) of Sweden between 1989 and 1997 for the New Jersey Transit and SEPTA railway lines. As of 2018, the type has been retired. New Jersey Transit retired its fleet in 2012 and SEPTA retired its single example, No. 2308, in December 2018.

One of the NJT units, No. 4424, has been spared from scrapping and donated to the United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey in Boonton, NJ on July 3, 2023.[1]

Trivia[]

  • The ALP-44 is a variant of the EMD AEM-7 and closely resemble them.
  • In 2011, all of NJT's units were officially retired from service, but with the exception of Nos. 4405, 4407, and 4409, which were assigned to the Atlantic City Express Service (ACES). However, these three remaining units were also placed into retirement with the eventual cancellation of the ACES service in early 2012.
  • During the summer of 2011, four of NJT's units, Nos. 4402, 4403, 4408, and 4410, were leased by Amtrak for work train service through the Hudson River tunnels for a period of time, but have since been returned.
  • As of today, SEPTA’s only unit, No. 2308, was scrapped. Meanwhile, NJT’s units were stored away at the Lackawanna cut-off stub track in Stanhope, New Jersey and they still remain there to this day. They are now collecting rust and being vandalized with graffiti being sprayed on and parts being stolen, so it's very unlikely they will ever run again anytime soon.
  • On July 3, 2023, one of NJT's units, No. 4424, was donated to the United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey in Booton, NJ.
