The 791 series was a Japanese non-revenue electric multiple unit operated by the Japanese National Railways from 1959 to May 1980 for inspection purposes.
History[]
The 791 series set was designed as a vehicle which was used to test the practical uses of AC equipment on rail in Japan. A single car was built by Kawasaki Sharyō in 1959 for use around the eastern regions of Japan; electrical equipment was manufactured by Toshiba. The car was originally numbered MoYa 94000 but was renumbered to KuMoYa 791-1 the same year when a rule regarding the standardization of train names was enacted.
The car was first located at Tsuruga Depot and tested on the Hokuriku Main Line. It would be transferred to Minami-Fukuoka Depot in Kyushu in October 1962, where some issues with the car would arise due to the electrical current being too high a frequency for the car to handle. In December 1972 the car was used to test an AC thyristor drive system; the car would then sit in storage at Minami-Fukuoka Depot and be used infrequently, having been largely replaced by the KuMoYa 740 series cars, until it was removed from JNR's roster in May 1980 and scrapped, long before JNR's privatization and division.
Design[]
The 791 series car featured a squared-off design similar to the 153 series cars but featured a single headlight mounted on the roof.
The car was painted in maroon with cream accents.
Specifications[]
Construction was of steel. Low pressure tap control was used to control the locomotive; this was later changed to a thyristor drive system with the December 1972 test.
