The 783 series, branded Hyper Saloon, is a Japanese limited express electric multiple unit operated by the Kyushu Railway Company since March 1988.
History[]
The 783 series was designed to compete against high-speed bus services and cars, with various new highways springing up around the Kyushu region; the sets were also designed to replace the older 485 series sets which were slowly being deemed obsolete, and they were deemed to be hopeless when it came to refurbishments involving increasing the speed of rail services.
Jointly built by Hitachi and Kinki Sharyo, the ninety cars to be put into service were delivered from 1988 to 1991 and put into service progressively; the first set entered service on 13 March 1988 on the Ariake service. As the trains were branded Hyper Saloon, the Ariake services they ran on were known as the Hyper Ariake services.
While the sets are no longer used on Ariake services due to the introduction of newer trains such as the 787 series sets, the sets have been used on a variety of other services as well, such as the Kirameki, Kaiō, Hyūga and Kirishima services. However, the sets are most well known today for being used on the Midori and Huis Ten Bosch services.
The 783 series sets are notable for being the first limited express trains ordered by the then-newly formed JR Group after the privatization of the Japanese National Railways about a year prior.
Scrapping of the sets began in 2020.
Cab variations[]
There are three cab variations of the 783 series sets. One is the standard cab, another is an older style cab that is no longer used and the third is a gangway-equipped cab as seen on various sets.
Design[]
The 783 series adopted a modern design language for limited express trains; however, this design language would not be carried on onto more modern limited express trains built for JR Kyushu.
The sets are painted in a variety of accents, but retain the unpainted steel bodies. Huis Ten Bosch sets CM21 through CM25 are painted in orange and feature European styling.
Specifications[]
Construction is of stainless steel. End cars are 21.05 meters long while intermediate cars are 20 meters long. The 783 series sets use a thyristor-based traction system which would be later used on the 811 and 787 series sets.
