The 493 series was a Japanese non-revenue dual-voltage electric multiple unit operated by the Japanese National Railways from 1961 to 1976.

History

The 493 series set was designed as a vehicle which was used to test the practical uses of AC equipment on rail in Japan. A single set was converted from 51 series cars KuMoYa 51085 and 51086 in 1961 at JNR's Morioka Works. The set entered service that year. In October 1964, the set was converted to become an overhead line inspection vehicle. The set was scrapped in 1976, long before the JNR's privatization and division.

Design

The 493 series set featured a squared-off design similar to the 153 series cars but featured a single headlight mounted on the roof. The set's doors and windows were filled in.

The set was painted in dark red with cream accents.
