The 489 series is a Japanese dual-voltage limited express electric multiple unit operated by the Japanese National Railways and its successor companies from March 1972 to March 2011.
History[]
The 489 series was designed in 1971 as an upgraded version of the 485 series sets designed to operate over the steep 66.7‰ (1 in 15) gradients of the Usui Pass. These were used on various services like the Asama and Hakusan services. JR East withdrew all its sets by 2000, and by 2010, only three nine-car sets were left in operation, numbered H01 to H03, all with JR West, used on overnight Noto services.
With the end of regular Noto services the same year, the three remaining sets lost their regular duties and were put into storage; sets H02 and H03 were withdrawn and scrapped in June and August of the same year. The remaining set, H01, was used on a special final run service on 26 and 27 March 2011, following which it was stored at Kanazawa Depot and officially retired on 1 July 2012.
Design[]
The 489 series' body style is very similar to the 485 series cars.
Specifications[]
Construction is of steel. Each car was 21 meters long. Traction motors were resistor controlled, which was standard for the time. The 489 series sets can also be arranged in a number of configurations, ranging from 6 cars to 12 cars long.
