The 419 series was a Japanese suburban electric multiple unit converted from surplus 583 series cars in 1984 by various JNR workshops and operated in the Hokuriku region of Japan near the coastline from March 1985 to March 2011 by the Japanese National Railways and its successor company, the West Japan Railway Company.
History[]
Converted from 583 series cars deemed to be surplus, the 419 series was introduced on 14 March 1985 with the introduction of the revised timetable. For their entire lives, the 15 three-car sets were used around the western coast of Japan on the Hokuriku Main Line.
With the introduction of newer 521 series cars, the first two sets, D10 and D13, were withdrawn in March 2007 with the introduction of the revised timetable; the last set was withdrawn in March 2011 with the introduction of the revised timetable.
Design[]
Being converted from 583 series, their body style is completely identical; however, each set has two different cab end designs.
Specifications[]
Construction is of steel. Each car was 21 meters long. Traction motors were resistor controlled, which was somewhat obsolete at the time due to the advent of the variable frequency drive, but this is understandable due to the 419 series themselves being converted from 583 series cars.
Preservation[]
The following 419 series cars were preserved in the past but have since been scrapped:
Car number | Manufacturer | Date manufactured | Date retired | Previous sets | Last location | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
KuHa 418-1 | Kisha Seizō | February 1972 | March 2011 | D01 | Nihon Sōgō Recycle, Takaoka, Japan | Stored there after retirement; scrapped November 2021 |
