The 313 series is a Japanese suburban electric multiple unit operated by the Central Japan Railway Company since May 1999.
History[]
Developed to replace the 113, 115 and similar sets, the 313 series was introduced on 6 May 1999 as a new type of suburban train to supplement the 211-5000, 213 and 311 series sets. The sets were designed to be modular and be able to serve on a wide variety of services, including normal local trains and Rapid services.
A total of 539 cars were built from 1999 to 2014, all based at Ōgaki, Jinryō and Shizuoka Depots. All sets are in service, and have become a mainstay in JR Central's commuter fleet.
Design[]
The 313 series' body style is similar to the earlier 373 series sets, so some design language carries over; however, there are a variety of differences in the actual designs of both sets. The 313 series sets also incorporate a variety of design improvements in their body design compared to the 373 series sets. The sets have unpainted stainless steel bodies with steel cabs painted in white.
The width of the cars is based on the Minobu Line's loading gauge, allowing the sets to travel on all of JR Central's lines powered by DC electrification.
Specifications[]
Construction is of stainless steel. End cars are 20.1 meters long, 2.966 meters wide and 4.02 meters high. Traction motors are powered by insulated gate bipolar transistor variable frequency drives provided by Toshiba of different specifications depending on when the set was built. Earlier sets use roller blind-style destination indicators and shield-beam headlights, while later sets use full-color LCD destination indicators and high-intensity discharge fixtures for headlights.
Incidents[]
On 2 March 2017, 313-5000 series set Y102 collided with passenger cars near Aichi Station in the early hours of the morning. The set was badly damaged with part of its front windshield cracked and car bodies dented and needed repairs. The set was later towed to Ōgaki Depot by 313-5000 series set Y107 and 313-5300 series set Z1 for repairs as it could not move on its own; to supplement set Y102, set B6 was moved from Jinryō Depot to Ōgaki Depot on 14 March 2017. Both cars were towed to Nippon Sharyo in the early morning of 14 September 2019 and scrapped; two replacement cars bearing the same numbers as the scrapped cars were manufactured in 2019 and put into service.
