The 289 series is a Japanese limited express electric multiple unit operated by the West Japan Railway Company since October 2015.
History[]
The 289 series were converted from JR West 683-2000 series cars used on Shirasagi services which were deemed to have been made surplus following the 2015 timetable revision. These differ from the 683 series in that their AC current equipment is disconnected and removed.
The first sets entered service on 31 October 2015 to replace aging 381 series cars. The sets based at either Fukuchiyama or Kyoto Depots. These are used on the Kounotori and Kuroshio services, in a similar vein to the 287 series, with a colored stripe down the sides of each car body denoting the service they are used on. Fleet number stickers were added to the Kuroshio sets in 2020; they are located on the driver's cab. Fleet numbers for the Kounotori sets are located near the front coupler housing.
Two sets, FH301 and FH306, were reconverted back to 683 series specifications in April and June 2019 respectively; this included the restoration of their AC current equipment. They returned to service as sets R14 and R15.
Design[]
Being converted from 683 series cars, the 289 series cars look identical to the 683 series cars; however, the side stripes of the 289 series are either seafoam green or red depending the service it is supposed to ply.
Specifications[]
Construction is of a friction stir-welded double-skinned aluminum alloy using the Hitachi A-Train concept. End cars are 21.6 meters long while intermediate cars are 20.6 meters long. Traction motors are three-level insulated gate bipolar transistor variable frequency drives manufactured by either Mitsubishi or Toshiba; drives manufactured by Mitsubishi make a wooshing sound that steps up in pitch as the train accelerates, while the Toshiba drives make a quieter wooshing sound.
The 289 series is equipped with a musical horn that plays a simple do-mi-so-do tune. This musical horn is standard on most of JR West's limited express fleet.
A notable trait about the 289 series is that they are very similar in specifications and performance to the 287 series; however, they cannot operate in multiples.
