The 287 series is a Japanese limited express electric multiple unit operated by the West Japan Railway Company since March 2011.
History[]
The 287 series was developed to replace the 183 series sets that were used on many limited express services that plied JR West's "Big X Network". The first sets entered service on 12 March 2011.
The sets ply the Kounotori, Kinosaki, Kuroshio, Maizuru and Hashidate services and are based at either the Fukichiyama or Hineno Depots. They have been used on the irregular Maharoba service since 2019.
Fleet number stickers were added to the Kuroshio sets in 2020; they are located on the driver's cab. Fleet numbers for the Kounotori sets are located near the front coupler housing.
Design[]
The 287 series uses a somewhat streamlined design based on the gangwayed cars of the 681 and 683 series sets, but have additional crushable zones and increased front-end crash protection. The cars have a side stripe below the windows which indicate which service the set plies; sets used on Kuroshio services have an "ocean green" stripe, while sets on all other services have a maroon stripe.

Construction is of a double-skinned aluminum. End cars are 21.1 meters long. Traction motors can be of two types, both of which are insulated gate bipolar transistor variable frequency drives; one type is manufactured by Toshiba, which gives off a hissing noise when the train accelerates from idle, while another is manufactured by Tōyō Denki Seizō, which gives off a distinctive, high-pitched wail.
The 287 series is equipped with a musical horn that plays a simple do-mi-so-do tune. This musical horn is standard on most of JR West's limited express fleet.
