The 223 series is a Japanese suburban electric multiple unit operated by the West Japan Railway Company since April 1994.
History[]
The 223 series was designed to be a suburban train following in the veins of the 221 series. A total of 927 cars were produced from 1994 to 2008, each with various changes in specifications based on which sub-variant it was under.
The sets are most commonly used on suburban services out of Kyoto and are most notable for plying the Kansai Airport Rapid service.

The 223 series adopted a modern design language for suburban commuter trains which would be carried on onto more modern suburban commuter trains built for JR West, such as the 225 and 521 series. The 223 series cars had a multitude of different cab end designs.
Specifications[]
Construction is of stainless steel. Each car is 20 meters long. The 223 series make use of a variety of variable frequency drives; the 223-0 series use three-level gate turn-off thyristor (GTO) drives manufactured by Toshiba which make a melodic wail when accelerating from idle, the 223-1000 and 223-5000 series use three-level insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) drive manufactured by Mitsubishi which make a hissing sound when accelerating from idle, while other series like the 223-2000 series use three-level IGBT drives manufactured by Mitsubishi which produce a wooshing sound that steps up in pitch or the 223-6000 series which use IGBT drives manufactured by Hitachi which produce a more melodic sound with an abrupt pitch shift. Some 223 series sets such as W12 use Toshiba IGBT drives which produce a somewhat subdued hissing sound.
The 223 series is equipped with a musical horn which is standard on most of JR West's commuter fleet.
Some sets have had their headlights switched out for dual high-intensity discharge fixtures; examples include set W38 and HE401.
