The 191 series was a Japanese non-revenue electric multiple unit operated by the Japanese National Railways from May 1973 to February 1983 for inspection purposes.
History[]
The 191 series set was designed as a vehicle which could inspect overhead lines and signal circuits of the JNR network. A single set was built, converted from two 181 series cars at JNR's Kokura Works; SaHa 180-5 and MoHaShi 180-11 would be extensively rebuilt to become KuMoYa 191-1 and 190-1 respectively.
The sole two-car unit was completed in May 1973 and stationed at the now-inactive Tamachi Depot. It would be used on lines around the Tokyo metropolitan area as well as around the Niigata region; with the introduction of the 193 series sets in 1980 which could automatically inspect major lines such as the Yamanote and Keihin-Tōhoku Lines, the 191 series set began to be used less and less before it was retired in February 1983. The set would be scrapped the same year, long before JNR's privatization and division in 1987.
Design[]
The 191 series sets featured a similar design to the 485, 489 and 583 series cars along with other similar vehicles. The set featured distinctive protruding headlights and was painted in the same blue and yellow paintscheme as other maintenance-of-way vehicles operated by the JNR.
Specifications[]
Construction was of steel.
