The 169 series is a Japanese limited express electric multiple unit. Built from 1967 to 1979 for JNR, the 169 series was used around the east parts of Japan until their retirement in 2001.
History[]
Based on the earlier 165 series, the 169 series was produced as a variation of the aforementioned series, with 187 cars being produced from 1967 to 1969.
The first set entered service in 1967 with other sets following suit later. The sets began to retire in the early 1990s and all were removed from regular service by 1996; some sets were later used on the Shinkansen Relay services from 1997 to 2001. Some sets were later resold to the Shinano Railway and were used up to 2013 on the railway.
Design[]
As the 167 series sets were directly based on the 165 series sets, their design carries over. The sets most famously carried the Shōnan orange and green livery carried by many JNR trains of the time, although various other sets did carry other liveries such those stationed at Mitaka Depot (as shown above), with others including Shinshū and Nagano color schemes.

Construction is of steel. Each car was 20 meters long. Traction motors were resistor controlled, which was standard for the time.
