The 167 series was a Japanese limited express electric multiple unit operated by the Japanese National Railways and its successors from 1965 to 2003.

History

Based on the earlier 165 series, the 167 series was produced as a dedicated school excursion-type train set, and were used as such when originally introduced.

With the discontinuation of the school excursion services in 1974, the 167 series sets were relegated to normal limited express services. With the privatization of the JNR, 35 cars were allocated to JR East and were based at Tamachi Depot while 16 were allocated to JR West and based at Miyahara Depot.

The JR West sets retired first in 2001, following with the JR East sets shortly after in 2003. No 167 series cars have been preserved, although there is a mockup of car KuHa 167-1 currently at the Railway Museum in Saitama, painted in the original livery the sets were painted in. This mockup was constructed by Nippon Sharyo using "similar parts" to the original trains.

Design

As the 167 series sets were directly based on the 165 series sets, their design carries over. Refurbished sets would use more modern rectangular headlight fixtures.

The sets were originally painted in a red livery with yellow accents, signifying that the set was used on school excursion services; all sets were repainted later into a variety of other liveries, including the Shōnan green and orange livery JR East trains ever so famously wore.

Specifications

Construction is of steel. Each car was 20 meters long. Traction motors were resistor controlled, which was standard for the time.
