The 153 series, originally classified as the 91 series, was a Japanese limited express electric multiple unit operated by the Japanese National Railways from November 1958 to February 1983.
History[]
The 153 series sets were originally produced from 1958 to 1962 to supplement and potentially replace the older 80 series sets. When originally introduced, the 153 series sets were known as the 91 series sets, but were reclassified as the 153 series sets on 1 June 1959.
With their introduction, these were nicknamed the Tōkai-type Train as they were used around the central regions of Japan. During their service life, some 153 series cars were converted into 113, 165 and 167 series cars. The last sets were retired from service on 14 February 1983 as they were replaced by newer trains, such as the more effective 165, 167 and 185 series sets. The last 153 series cars converted to SaRo 165 series cars were retired in 1996.
No 153 series cars have been preserved.
Design[]
The sets had body styles similar to the ones used on the 113, 115, 165, 167 and 169 series sets; the sets also somewhat resemble the 155 and 159 series sets. The sets most famously wore the Shōnan green and orange livery first worn by the 80 series sets; the livery would carry on its use onto later trains used by the JNR and the later JR Group.
Specifications[]
Construction was of steel. Each car was 20 meters long. Traction motors were resistor controlled, which was standard for the time.
