The 125 series is a Japanese single-car electric multiple unit operated by the West Japan Railway Company since March 2003.
History[]
The 125 series cars were designed to be a modern train used on rural lines. The 125 series cars were the second single car electric multiple units purchased by the JR Group; the first was JR Shikoku's 7000 series cars. The 125 series cars entered service on 15 March 2003 on the then-newly electrified Obama Line.
All eighteen cars are in service, all based at either Tsuruga or Aboshi Depots; the entire fleet was originally stationed at Fukuchiyama Depot but was then moved to both Tsuruga and Aboshi Depots for unknown reasons.
Design[]
The 125 series cars are based on the 223-2000 series sets, so some design language carries over. Sets N1 to N4, delivered later, have larger front-end skirts and darker tinted windows.
Specifications[]
Construction is of stainless steel with steel front ends. The cars use a two-level insulated gate bipolar transistor variable frequency drive as a traction system manufactured by Tōyō Denki Seizō which produces a distinctive cadence. The cars have two sliding passenger doors per side but have provisions for a third in the middle of the car.
The 125 series is equipped with a musical horn which is standard on most of JR West's commuter fleet.
