The 107 series is a Japanese outer suburban electric multiple unit operated by the East Japan Railway Company from June 1988 to November 2017.
History[]
The 107 series was built in two subtypes, the 107-0 and 107-100 series sets; the 107-0 series sets were used on the Nikkō Line, while the 107-100 sets were used on the Ryōmō, Agatsuma, Jōetsu and Shin'etsu Lines. These were designed and manufactured in-house by an internal group known as the 107 series Electric Train In-House Construction Project Team; the car bodies were assembled by Tokyu Car Corporation in knockdown kit format and assembled at various JR East plants.
Due to their age, the sets were slowly withdrawn beginning in 2013; the entire 107-0 series fleet on the Nikko Line was withdrawn in June 2013, being replaced by four refurbished 205 series sets. With the introduction of the 2017 revised timetable in March 2017, 107-100 series sets were removed from service on the Agatsuma and Shin'etsu Lines and a section of the Jōetsu Line; only eight sets remained on the books in July 2017, with only two of those sets, R7 and R8, actually operational.
In early October 2017, a series of special final runs were held to mark the withdrawal of the remaining sets, following which, the 107 series were officially withdrawn; the last set, R1, was retired on 1 November 2017. Six sets were resold to the Joshin Electric Railway; the first of these sets entered service in March 2019. A total of five sets are in service, with the sixth set acting as a parts donor.
Design[]
Despite both having different designs and color palettes overall, both the 107-0 and 107-100 series cars have identical body styles. 107-0 series cars have a retro-style paint scheme of cream with brown accents, while the 107-100 series have a more generic paint scheme of cream with dark green and pink accents.
Specifications[]
Construction is of steel. Each car is 20 meters long. The air conditioning units, bogies and traction motors were reused from scrapped 165 series sets to save costs.
