The 105 series is a Japanese outer suburban electric multiple unit operated by the Japanese National Railways and its various successor companies since February 1981.

History

The 105 series was built in two distinct subtypes; of the 126 total cars built, 60 cars were newly built, while the remaining 66 were converted from 103 series cars.

JR West is the sole operator of the 105 series, with JR East having scrapped their four cars in 1998.

Design

There are three known variations of the 105 series' body styles; one is a somewhat modern body style expected of the time period, and the remaining two are very similar to the body styles of 101 or 103 series cars; the latter two body styles are seen on cars that were converted from 103 series cars, while the modern body style is seen on new-build cars. Converted cars KuHa 104-551 (ex-MoHa 102-385) and KuHa 104-601 (ex-SaHa 103-66) feature the more modern body style as seen on the new-build cars; many of the older body style cars have since been rebuilt to feature the more modern body style.

Specifications

Construction is of steel. Each car was 20 meters long. Traction motors were resistor controlled, which was standard for the time. The fairly low speeds of the lines the then-new 105 series cars were supposed to operate on meant that the 101 and 103 series cars were too powerful for those lines due to their high proportion of motored cars, and so the 105 series were designed with that in mind; this resulted in them having only one motored car per set.
