H1 was a 16-car 0 Series Shinkansen set operated by the Japanese National Railways from October 1964 to March 1977.

Description[]

H1 was completed by Nippon Sharyo on 3 March 1964 as N1; N1 was the first 0 Series Shinkansen set ever built, acting as a pre-series set to the numerous 0 Series cars that followed, it being numbered as such with reference to its manufacturer, Nippon Sharyo. As with all early Shinkansen sets, these were not originally given designations as there was no need for classification as these were the only trains of its type running at the time. Six of the cars from the set were originally classified as Class 1000 Shinkansen cars from an unofficial "C" set, numbered 1011 to 1016; these were later renumbered. N1 entered service on 1 October 1964 with the opening of the Tōkaidō Shinkansen.

All Hikari trains were lengthened to 16 cars on 8 December 1969; four more cars were manufactured by Hitachi for insertion into N1 in 1969, with N1 commencing service in this form on 9 December 1969. These new cars occupied positions 7, 8, 13 and 14 in the consist. N1 was renumbered to H1 in 1972 following the restructuring of the 0 Series Shinkansen's numbering format, with H now signifying a set used on the Hikari service. H1 was taken out of service in March 1977.

Three cars from H1, 21-1, 22-1 and 16-1, have been preserved, all located at the Kyoto Railway Museum.
